Maurice Strong is recognized as the world's leading environmentalist. He was Secretary General of both the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which launched the world environmental movement and the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. The first Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Maurice Strong can also be credited with globalizing the environmental movement.
I have had the great privilege of knowing the Honorable Maurice Strong for over 20 years. His tireless work and dedication to engage all sectors in protecting, preserving and restoring eco-systems is beyond comparison. As his Media Advisor to the Earth Summit, I had the honor of reporting directly to him on media strategy and implementation that included representing global media and the International Facilitating Committee (IFC). This group was composed of high level representatives from all sectors of society including Bella Abzug, Ashok Khosla, Chip Lindner and many other thought leaders in their respected fields. This prestigious position allowed me to observe the workings of one of the finest environmental minds ever to grace our planet. His strategic thinking is responsible for the success of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. It was his vision to include stakeholders from the public to the private sector. His genius has left an indelible imprint on our planet for centuries to come. Earth is lucky to have him as its number one advocate.
